Extended Learning Opportunity: Global to Provide Summer Academies in Six Pueblo City Schools

Last year, Global Partnership Schools was selected by Pueblo City Schools as its school improvement partner to dramatically improve six struggling middle and high schools over the next three years. Three of the middle schools, Freed, Pitts and Risely, have implemented a turnaround model, one of four intervention models outlined by federal rules governing the school improvement grants. The other three schools, Central High School, Roncalli Middle School and the Youth and Family Academy (YAFA) charter school, have implemented a transformation model.

In June, over 400 students from Freed, Pitts, Risley, Central, Roncalli, and YAFA will attend Global Summer Academies for extra support and an extended learning opportunity. Students were invited to attend the program, which will run June 13—30, after viewing their performance on standards-based assessments. They will focus on gaining reading and math proficiency in preparation for success in school and beyond. (more…)

In August, Global Partnership Schools and the Warren J. Harding High School Community embarked on a journey together, and as the new semester begins on January 31, 2011, the Harding community is celebrating a renewed focus. Teachers, Administrators, and Staff prepared for the new beginning by moving into the smaller learning communities, organizing, and painting [photos here]. Real change is evident when you enter the school‘s doors and excitement permeates the classroom and halls.

“The work has been challenging and at times daunting,” said Principal Kevin Walston, “but as Dr. Martin Luther King once said, ‘Only in the darkness can you see the stars.’ We have many bright lights among us, and with this new semester comes a new beginning. We have much to celebrate as we continue on our quest to improve student outcomes at Warren Harding High School.” (more…)

Diplomas Count 2010

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

In Education Week’s annual report, Diplomas Count 2010, Manny Rivera addresses the use of data in identifying students early on who are in danger of slipping through the cracks.

The signs that students may not last until graduation often show up in the data teachers have collected in elementary and middle school, says Manuel J. Rivera, a former Rochester, N.Y., superintendent who is now the chief executive officer of the New York City-based Global Partnership Schools.

“You begin to see signs long before 9th grade—kids who don’t have interest, and that begins to impact their attendance,” he says. “You see kids who test quite well, but who are completely not engaged in learning.”

They include some students, Rivera says, who are “inappropriately and incorrectly” labeled as having disabilities and end up languishing in special education classes. (more…)

Making a Difference

Making a Difference

Global Partnership Schools’ Supplemental Educational Services (SES) team, led by Terry Hofer and Elizabeth Gandy, has been working with school districts in seven states. The SES program is making a difference, and those efforts have been recognized by the Creighton School District.

“While observing [Global Partnership Schools’] tutors at Creighton School, Gateway, and Machan, I found the instruction to be directly connected to the goal listed in the child’s Student Learning Plan. Matching the students’ instruction to their specific needs is easily met through the use of [Global Partnership Schools’] customized computer program,” said a Creighton School District administrator in an email. “The students looked happy to be there, which says a lot for [Global Partnership Schools’] tutors’ ability to build a positive relationship with the students centered around learning, even after those children put in a long school day.” (more…)

On a recent CNN Newsroom segment, Dr. Manny Rivera spoke with Heidi Collins about the high school dropout problem and its impact on the nation’s economy. “There have been a number of economic studies over the years that do link educational attainment to income,” said Dr. Rivera. The Alliance for Excellent Education released the study, The Economic Benefits from Halving the Dropout Rate: A Boom to Businesses in the Nation’s Largest Metropolitan Areas, which measures on a city-by-city basis the growth in jobs, home ownership, levels of spending and investment, and car sales that will result from cutting the high school dropout rate in half.
